Asturias is considered a mountainous viticulture territory in Spain; cultivation that is characterised by working at altitudes of over 500 meters above sea level, and on land with a slope of greater than 30%. This ‘heroic viticulture’ in vineyards where growing, maintenance and harvesting is carried out manually and on small lots of land on terraces, results in highly-exclusive grape varieties of exceptional quality.
A curiosity about PDO Cangas Spanish wine is that it is traditionally consumed in “cachos”, cups in the shape of a wooden bowl, handmade and very open to help oxygenate the wine and reduce its acidity. In bygone years, this wooden cup was also shared among neighbours, fostering the social enjoyment of the excellent results of production efforts. The cachos, which are difficult to manufacture and require a careful process to ensure the life of the wood, are now virtually extinct.
