The Faro ceramic páxara-design jar is a glazed piece about 30 centimetres high and 10 centimetres in diameter.
Measurements are approximate and may vary slightly between one piece and another, due to their traditional artisan production.
It has a small base and can be used to hold food, as it is waterproofed by the glaze. The decorative motif consists of a central figure: an image of the páxara animal, half fish half bird, after which it is named, and various plant motifs forming a border around the figure, which is believed to represent the cycle of life. Colours such as green are used to mark the contour lines of natural motifs, and yellow is used as filler for decorative motifs.
The pigments are all natural and are extracted by hand from Asturias minerals according to tradition.
The metallic sheen resulting from accumulation of the pigment is highly characteristic in these pieces.
